Chinese Drama

The Hwa Chong Chinese Drama Club is a dynamic and close-knit community that offers a rich array of engaging activities, and proudly stands as one of Hwa Chong’s flagship programmes. It provides students with valuable opportunities to explore and refine their language proficiency, acting techniques, and creative expression to their fullest potential. Every member is encouraged to take part in performances, strengthening their Chinese language skills, boosting their self-confidence, and deepening their appreciation for the dramatic arts.

With a strong focus on both the appreciation and practice of drama, the club seeks to ignite a lasting passion for the performing arts—whether on stage or behind the scenes—and to nurture well-rounded individuals with artistic sensitivity and the confidence to express themselves meaningfully.

Over the years, the Chinese Drama Club has actively participated in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) and staged its own annual production, offering every member a platform to shine and grow as performers, storytellers, and creators.

Chinese Orchestra

Established in 1985, the Hwa Chong Institution Chinese Orchestra is an esteemed Chinese orchestra in Singapore, rich in history and culture. The orchestra has been unwavering in its aim of spreading the passion for Chinese music and culture, as evident from its various splendid achievements it has gathered over the years. In addition, HCICO has constantly performed in numerous events, most recently at the recent HC100 Gala Dinner.

The orchestra has been obtaining the highest award of Distinction in the Singapore Youth Festival for many years and also received the best CCA award for aesthetic groups in 2016. Furthermore, the orchestra has been honoured with the opportunity to perform in other countries such as China, Australia and Malaysia. Such honours were made possible only because the orchestra engages renowned and proficient musicians to tutor the students in their respective instruments.

The orchestra is always aspiring to reach greater heights by exploring different types of music. As such, the orchestra plays a plethora of music genres, ranging from modern songs to Japanese music.

Choir

The Hwa Chong Institution High School Choir is a vocal ensemble of choristers deeply passionate about singing. The choir has improved in their vocal techniques and musicianship with the guidance of our conductors Mr Low Xu Hao and Mr Yong Chee Foon. The High School Choir’s repertoire spans across various genres and languages. In 2019, the choir was part of the school’s 100th year anniversary musical, a key milestone to the school and the choir.

English Drama

The Hwa Chong Institution English Drama Club (HCIEDC) focuses on appreciating the performing art of drama; hence, we constantly strive to ignite the passion for drama in our members, whether on stage or behind the scenes, through plays, monologues and other such activities, and train them to be the best they can be.

Throughout the years we have attended the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) and have our own annual production, where we allow all our club members to let their talents shine on stage.

School Band

Hwa Chong School Band, formed in 1967, is a CCA where people come together to perform music ranging from pop songs to classical pieces. The School Band performs at various school events such as the Flag Raising Ceremony, Open House, and the School-Based National Day Parade. Outside of school, we perform at the annual Schools in Concert and competitions such as the Singapore Youth Festival and the Asia Pacific Band Festival. This CCA also offers many opportunities to forge new friendships and explore the wonders of music.

With the help of trained musical professionals and access to freely available instruments, we will guide you step by step on your journey to musical excellence—with no prior musical experience required. Our rehearsals are a place where the efforts of all band members come together to form a cohesive, magical sound for all to enjoy. Joining the Hwa Chong School Band can be your first step toward a personal journey of musical excellence and a lifelong love for the art of music.

String Orchestra

The HCI String Orchestra, founded in 1980, is an ensemble of string players that deeply love music, performing a large variety of different pieces. We present ourselves as one of the only 12 high schools in the country with an in-house string orchestra. Each rehearsal session aims to transcend the confines of theory and notation, immersing budding musicians in vivid soundscapes through the artistry of their performance. At its core, we foster an environment where members forge lasting friendships, have fun with music together, and cultivate crucial skills of teamwork and discipline.

We convene twice weekly for rehearsal sessions, which are complemented by fully subsidised external music lessons for cello, viola, and double bass players, allowing us to continually refine our craft. With a comprehensive inventory of instruments (loaned to members for free), we aspire to be the epicentre of where music comes alive in Hwa Chong.
